To address some of your confusion, Armstrong's attitude to Mustang (and Alex for that matter) is because she thinks they are 'soft' i.e. they use kindness and emotion to influence their behavior, while she is definitely someone who takes action for the greater good. But that's only on the surface, they definitely have a deep-rooted trust in each other's character. It's like Mustang and Ed who bicker on the surface but actually respect and rely on each other when it counts.
