Well... that was more of an ash cloud which Asuma then ignited to burn Hidan. Regarding how jutsus and elemental releases work... complicated to explain completely. You'll get more of it while the story progresses. Enough to know that you can turn chakra in different way to have different effects from nature releases like fire or wind, to genjutsu(illusions) and stuff. Plus all the wierd special jutsus. Also also Asuma cut a bit into Hidan's ear just to verify whether his own ear will be fine afterwards so they know the jutsu does not work anymore then proceded to attack him across his neck, by the way his necklace and protector around the neck flew away. PG13 censorship won't show it explicitly, but he went for a decapitation move ๐ Can't wait for the next episode's reaction ๐คฉ
