here's a doodle i came up with when trying out a different style, inspired by bluekomadori's digital watercoloring style and ken sugimori's 90s pokemon official art
bluekomadori had made a couple tutorials for folks to learn their digital watercolor technique in SAI, but using clip studio paint instead, my methods for achieving the look were completely different, but the end result is decently similar i think! however, as much as i like the messy watercolor effect, i think if i do this in the future i'll lean a little more into the sugimori style and make it look tidier
my first attempt at figuring out how to adapt this style was done on a trace of some official pokemon art:

sometimes to clear my head and focus on learning a specific skill, i just need something familiar as the basis. i had noticed trying to jump in and 'watercolor' a drawing of my own was stressing me out too much, so it was a good starting point to figure out how to begin the process on my own art
privately borrowing official art for the purposes of learning is helpful sometimes. this is the only place you'll see these sorts of private studies of mine since i didn't draw it myself of course!
if you're wondering what got me doing digital watercolors all the sudden since it's not my usual style...i made these out of excitement over some new traditional art supplies i ordered on a slight whim the other day - some watercolor brush pens - that will be arriving today or so! i'm not much of a traditional artist, but somehow i got sucked into watching reviews about different watercolor brush pens on youtube and it really made me interested in trying them out for myself. i enjoy the soft looks you can get with traditional watercolor, but i've always been intimidated by all the stuff involved. being brush pens, i think these will be familiar and convenient enough to convince me to work on paper for once. figured i'd at least give it a shot :}
i have work tonight but i will get to try my new little toys out on my days off coming up!
have a good rest-of-weekend!
