Enon had said that he was a being created by magically connecting a spirit's soul to a human body. At the time, it seemed like such an unrealistic story, but now that the evidence was appearing before his eyes as reality, an indescribable strange feeling came over him.
Enon stared blankly at the tree that he said existed before his birth for a moment, but he didn't say anything more on the related topic. Turning his head, he quickly changed the subject.
"Well, anyway, from now on, it's only about finding it. We have to achieve the true purpose of coming here."
As he turned and walked towards the pile of wooden pieces, Kishiar asked him.
"May I ask what you plan to find first? Is there anything we can help with?"
"Not at the moment. Just sit quietly with that guy over there. As for what I plan to find first..."
Enon hesitated for a moment, as if pondering whether he should say this or not, and then met Yuder's eyes. Deciding it was alright, he continued.
"If the 'previous' me that he mentioned had come here, what would I have tried to find first? I'm thinking of retracing that first."
Enon picked up one of the piled wooden pieces. Only then did Yuder realize that it wasn't firewood, but a record with small letters densely written on it.
'It's impressive that it hasn't rotted.'
Even if it was an era where materials were scarce, someone like the great mage Luma should have been able to use paper to record, so why did he have to use that? Or was it just more convenient? Yuder focused his eyes as he watched Enon put down the wooden piece and pick up a new one.
He thought he might see something, but the written letters were too small to make out the contents at all.
'Even if it was written, there's a very high probability that I wouldn't be able to read the ancient language anyway.'
"He told you to sit, so you should sit down. Come over here."
At that moment, Kishiar spoke softly. Yuder turned his gaze away from Enon's direction. Kishiar had placed two chairs that were lying around so that they faced each other at the desk. Following his invitation, Yuder sat down in the direction where the desk's owner would have sat.
After sitting down, he noticed that the desk wasn't very large. Compared to Kishiar's desk in the Commander's office, it could be said to be relatively small and cute. Perhaps it meant that the desk's owner wasn't as large as Kishiar. As Yuder was examining the remaining scratches on the desk, Kishiar opened his mouth again and asked.
"What are you thinking about so deeply?"
"I was thinking that the desk's owner probably wasn't as big as the Commander."
"Haha. Indeed, I've never heard that Luma was taller than His Majesty the First Emperor."
Is that so? He wasn't very interested in old legends, so he didn't know well, but if Kishiar, who liked such things much more than him, said so, it must be true. As Yuder recalled the statue of the First Emperor he had seen on the way here, a sudden question arose.
"Come to think of it, I haven't seen many portraits or statues of mages, including the great mage Luma."
"That's because the general consensus is that it was due to the early mages being feared and rejected. The imperial family created the Imperial Court Mage to show that they could control the dangerous beings known as mages. On the other hand, they used such means to protect and hide them from external rejection."
"...That's somewhat similar to the Cavalry, isn't it?"
A smile appeared on Kishiar's lips, as if looking at a clever student.
"That's right. When I created the Cavalry, the Imperial Court Mage was the most referenced. Having a precedent is a very fortunate thing for later generations. Thanks to that, I was able to shut the mouths of many who questioned why we needed to create something like the Cavalry."
Although he said it was very difficult, Kishiar seemed to enjoy it in a way. It seemed that dealing with those who questioned him back then was quite fun for him in its own way.
From Yuder's perspective, it would have been most refreshing to just beat up the guys blocking the way and get their agreement, but Kishiar seemed to prefer the effort of resolving things one by one, no matter how frustrating and slow it was. It was because he was that kind of person that the Cavalry could be established as it is now.
"Personally, I feel a sense of reward in the fact that, unlike mages, portraits and statues of Awakeners are being properly produced. Like the monument of your achievements that His Majesty decided to erect in the Great Sarain Forest, or Ever's monument built in Mclara in the south."
"Ah..."
"Both are things that could never have been made in an atmosphere where Awakeners were feared or rejected like before. I'm also very pleased that the first Awakener monument is yours."
Hearing those words, it was inevitable that his previous life came to mind reflexively.
"Indeed... Commander, you seem to be right. Come to think of it, I've never seen such things being made in the previous game."
The same went for the other members of the Cavalry who made great contributions, including Yudrain Aile. Kishiar fell silent for a moment, then smiled with his eyes.
"...Yes. In that sense, I hope to see the day when a statue or a portrait of my assistant as an imperial contributor is produced next time. Although it seems that day is not far off, according to my thoughts."
"I don't really feel inclined to go that far."
"Why? Do you dislike having your appearance recorded? There are occasionally people like that."
Yuder pondered for a moment before opening his mouth.
"Rather than that... Others may not know, but I know that the things I've done were only possible after receiving one more chance."
Moreover, he had committed many sins. Just because he had gone back in time and those things had never happened, the sins he had committed before didn't disappear from Yuder's mind.
"I failed to do what I should have done and then merely corrected it, so I don't think there's a need to leave it as if boasting about it."
Kishiar was silent for a while.
"I see. So that's why you didn't seem very happy when the monument was given as a reward."
"It's not that I wasn't grateful for the reward bestowed by His Majesty the Emperor."
"I'm not trying to blame you."
The man gently shook his head and reached out his hand over the desk to cover Yuder's hand. Feeling the body temperature covering the black glove as if dampening it, the warmth that had been entangled until dawn came to mind. As Yuder thought about it and closed his mouth, only then did Kishiar quietly move his lips and whisper.
"I understand the reason. But there's one thing I definitely want to say."
"..."
"The reason humans leave monuments, statues, and portraits is to remember something. The Awakeners who come to remember the things you've accomplished will gain strength from them to bravely face and move forward in the face of great danger, just like you. Even if the day comes when we disappear, as long as that monument exists and there are those who can see it, it will continue."
Beneath the golden eyelashes, the red eyes flickered with firm conviction.
Yuder couldn't take his eyes off them.
"I hope you will be remembered that way. Even if it's an excessive desire and burdensome for you."
"I don't think that way. And, if I must say, rather than me..."
Yuder exhaled and spoke with sincerity.
"I also think it would be nice if more of the Commander's achievements and records were left behind."
"Me?"
Kishiar tilted his head as if he hadn't expected it.
"Yes. Honestly, isn't it right that you should come first?"
Although it was Yuder who killed the giant monster in the West, it would have been impossible without Kishiar overseeing everything that happened behind the scenes. Kishiar's performance in the South was also truly remarkable. Come to think of it, it was strange that a monument or statue hadn't been made yet.
When he said that, Kishiar let out a laugh.
"Hmm... Actually, a duke who has lost the right of succession shouldn't be left in official records."
"Pardon?"
"Isn't it a very unpleasant thing for someone hidden by the imperial family to come to the forefront? That's why His Majesty hasn't given me any awards related to records until now."
He knew that Kishiar was the Duke of Peletta, but he didn't know that was the reason why his monument or award hadn't been erected. As Yuder frowned, a secretive, cat-like expression appeared on Kishiar's face.
"...But there was one thing His Majesty returned to me yesterday."
In an instant, Emperor Keilusa's words flashed through Yuder's mind like light.
"He said he would return your authority as a member of the imperial family..."
"Yes. So from now on, you might be able to see what you want. Even if not, I'll try my best to leave as much as possible."
Yuder blinked a few times. The moment he thought about seeing a monument and statue with Kishiar's achievements written on them, his heart pounded loudly.
"...Yes. I really want to see them."
Overwhelmed with emotion, he unknowingly bowed deeply. The moment his stomach touched the desk, a drawer he didn't even know existed poked his skin and popped out abruptly.
'What's this?'
Yuder lowered his gaze and met eyes with a wooden piece inside the drawer.
Comments
Random thought. But I can't stop thinking about it. The succession in the first game should have went to Yuder. Hear me out. The crown prince was originally Kishiar. After Keilusa died, his brother should have been emperor. And then with Kishiar knowing he was dying from a broken vessel, it was his right to appoint a successor; and he chose Yudrain (we all know by successor I also mean spouse, but here its the same). When the phrase make the king whole again kept getting repeated, it made me go into overanalyzing mode because it could maybe also apply to Yuder's fraying soul.
