-POV Laena Velaryon-
I closed the door to my mother's private chambers, my heart heavy with thoughts of my brotherâs fate.
âIf Aemon wonât help me, then...â
âPrincess,â said Ser Gunthor, with whom I nearly bumped into, breaking the thread of my thoughts.
âSorry,â he said, apologizing for startling me.
âWhat do you want, Ser?â I asked in an impatient and slightly aggressive tone.
âPrince Aemon has summoned you to...â
âHe dares to summon me after turning his back on me for Alicent Hightower.â
Annoyed by my husbandâs behavior, I said as I walked on, âIâm busy trying to...â
âThat was not a request... princess,â he interrupted, preventing me from passing.
I narrowed my eyes at the knight, but realizing it would do no good, I finally followed him.
âI must keep my composure; he is now my lord husband, and I owe him obedience,â I thought.
As I approached Aemonâs chambers, a growing fury rose inside me, which I tried, with difficulty, to suppress deep within.
But when I saw him calmly sitting, petting a small kitten, all that anger exploded at once.
âI thought you wouldnât be this petty,â I said to my husband, aggressively.
âPetty?â he replied, raising an eyebrow, pretending to be confused.
âHe dares to play innocent after all he said yesterday.â
âYes, thatâs exactly what I said,â I replied, fully owning my words, even adding, âIt seems that in addition to lacking a heart, you also lack ears to properly hear what I just said to you.â
He fixed his gaze on me for a moment, then shook his head and said:
âI called you here to tell you something very important.â
âMore important than Laenorâs life?â I snapped back, furious.
âNo,â he said calmly, unhurried.
âVery well,â I said, turning to leave, having heard enough.
âI donât have much time left before Laenorâs duel, Iâm wasting my time here.â
âBut Iâd say itâs on the same level,â he added, casually.
âIâm very curious to know what could be as important as my brotherâs survival in your eyes,â I said, my tone dripping with sarcasm.
âIâve found a champion to kill Criston Cole,â Aemon suddenly said.
âWhat?â I asked, surprised by Aemonâs revelation.
âI said Iâve found a champion who will kill Criston Cole for Laenor,â he repeated.
âWho?â I asked quickly.
âYouâll see,â he said, enigmatically.
âSwear it to me,â I demanded, unable to comprehend this sudden change of heart.
Aemon smiled and said, âIs my word not enough for you?â
âThatâs not what I meant,â I replied, embarrassed, but still waiting for him to swear.
âIâm teasing you. Iâve really found a champion, and heâs good enough to kill the Queenâs Champion,â he said.
A brief silence hung between us before I looked at him and said, grateful for his help:
âThank you.â
âVery well, now I expect you to go tell your foolish little brother that this is the last time Iâm saving his neck, and if I find him in armor, ready to commit suicide, Iâll end his life myself,â he said.
I nodded, and he gestured for me to leave.

-POV Gunthor Royce-
I watched Laena Velaryon leave without a word, and as soon as she closed the door, I turned to my nephew, frowning:
âDo you really think itâs wise to save that sword swallowerâs life?â
âEven though Aemon had told me, it didnât take a seer to figure it out.â
âHeâs Laenaâs brother,â Aemon replied, deliberately dodging my question.
âAemon, donât give me that. I know all your secrets; if anyone knows how much you care about your personal interests, itâs me,â I said to my nephew, who merely smiled.
A long silence settled between us before he admitted:
âI spoke with mother.â
âI knew it,â I said, as only one person had that kind of persuasive power over Aemon.
âShe shared her concerns about how Iâve been treating Laena,â he added, explaining his gesture toward his future wife.
âAnd you changed your mind just because of that?â I asked, slightly incredulous.
âThat canât be the only reason,â I thought, sure there was more.
âItâs true that it made me think, but no, thatâs not what decided me,â Aemon said before adding coldly, âCriston Cole had to die. I havenât forgotten all heâs done on the orders of his mistresses, whether it was the time he tried to humiliate me for Rhaenyra or when he violently knocked down one of ours on Alicent Hightowerâs behalf.â
âThose are the only reasons?â I asked, still perplexed.
âNo, those are just the reasons that made it easier to condemn him in my mind,â he said before adding, âWhat drove me to take up arms and do it personally and publicly is because I finally realized that fear had changed sides.â
I nodded, understanding where he was going, but I still allowed myself to add:
âTrue, but what about your original plan? Attacking the queen so openly could lead to severe retaliation from her. Donât forget, she hasnât fulfilled her part of the deal yet.â
âI still plan to, but at some point, we have to face the truth. I canât hide anymore, so I might as well make a lasting impression on these people because I donât plan on seeing them again anytime soon,â Aemon said, looking out over the horizon, more peaceful than ever.

Are we going for the Mad King route, like chosing a Dragon as Leanor's champion.
