Oh I was thinking the name Locke might be in reference to Locke Lamora from the Gentleman Bastard series.

2024-06-24 07:28:51 +0000 UTCEhh, I don't think so. Imani is against all of Angharad's stated values. It's not like she hasn't used her foresight for violence before. In fact...that's really all she uses it for. I'd be more worried if she used it to lie to people to gain information. That's something that is outside her stated values.

2024-06-24 07:27:03 +0000 UTCthe name is luren, but what kind of god is he? Fenquzhu isnt a name
Ed
2024-06-16 20:46:02 +0000 UTCNo, her God is named Luren

2024-06-16 06:44:46 +0000 UTCFenquzhu? is that song's god?

2024-06-13 22:54:49 +0000 UTCGood chapter, but man,i have a hunch either evander pallides hast a DARK reveal, or Something terrible is going to Happen to him. Otherwise Songs sympathy in tension with the internalalised "Kings Bad" buildup would be wasted.

2024-06-09 19:28:12 +0000 UTCSo Odyssean was 'starved' and the current Oduromai was built up in his place and is 'wearing his clothes'. I wonder if the Golden Ram is the starved Odyssean trying to get back out of his grave and usurp the current Oduromai while it's followers take the throne. [“You might be, if he were interested,” the shade said. “He isn’t, though, so you bury it so deep I get to think about what his forearms look like when he rolls up his sleeves and how his shirt sticks to him when he’s sweating. Ugh.”] Rouse the crew and unfurl the sails, this ship is getting some wind behind it. Also I think "He isn't though, so you..." is better grammar. Awkward sentences I found - [Implications that the evil of those Odyssean committed evil on might be more told than true.] I had to reread this a few times, I think maybe 'those who Odyssean commited evil on' might be more clear. [and fighting them, then peace then being restored by Odyssean marrying] 'then' is awkwardly repeated, either one being removed would work I think. [She would be patient, one small request at a time, because could afford patience] because SHE could afford patience

2024-06-08 23:52:16 +0000 UTCI think Miriam thinks 'some', her shade says 'most'. Neither are reliable accounts I think.

2024-06-08 23:47:34 +0000 UTCThe Golden Ram could be the former island god before Ourodami. This blends the Argonauts with Odysseus, but what if 'Medea' was his first wife? There you get local royalty joining in kin murdering to support the outsider and get backstabber in turn.

2024-06-08 01:37:03 +0000 UTC> The shade eyed him with disdain. “Begone, fat man,” it said. “You meddle in-” Here we see how impulsive and rash the parasite is. It does not have the capacity, I think, to bargain in good faith. Every action we've seen from it has been from a place of anger, indignation, or self-preservation. And if it has been feeding on Maryam's most repressed thoughts, this makes sense, since those emotions have been at the core of her for a long time. For bargaining to even be a possibility, the parasite will have to become more than this.

2024-06-08 00:36:13 +0000 UTCI think there's something in House Lissenos' foreign descent mentioned in the last chapter and their repression of the original founder-sprit god, the Odyssean. If so, Cleon is likely to be close to the conspiracy to overthrow House Pallades, who claim descent from the Lissenos, because the Odyssean would represent a counter-claim from the other side of the Ataxia. It's not yet clear how the Golden Ram plays into any of this for me though. It'd be very very convenient if it was also a pointer to the same mystery. Maybe too convenient. Although, when you have an unknown power like Locke and Key showing up to give hints to the party (very purposefully waiting until Maryam was done with the book to take it), lots of things can get convenient indeed.

2024-06-07 22:26:28 +0000 UTCAngharad's really enjoying the handy bludgeoning weapon. I wonder if she realizes she's copping the Marshal's style? Highest form of flattery and all that.

2024-06-07 22:20:03 +0000 UTCAbsolutely good point. Angharad's sense of honor would not allow her act so unless in self-defense

2024-06-07 22:04:04 +0000 UTCFirstly it might not be half, we were only told some. Secondly, I'm not sure that refusing to feed part of your soul to a malevolent entity is the same thing as not facing it directly.

2024-06-07 20:32:25 +0000 UTCPart of me thinks Angharad should have simply killed Imani here, and contacted the Mala I ambassador as she said. The other part of me thinks that Osian would have considered that plan already if it was a good one. No part of me thinks leaving Imani alive after this confrontation will be without consequences.

2024-06-07 19:57:27 +0000 UTCWaiting for EE to have Lord Locke say "Cara Mia"
Joe Rachman
2024-06-07 18:08:21 +0000 UTCThanks. Actually if you think about it there are a lot similarities between the two exiled nobles mourning their lost home and family, desperately bottled up emotions, ties to a poorly understood possibly hostile aetheric entity that wants to reshape them, and a certain vengeful streak... Much like how Miriam commented on Tristan and Song's parallels.

2024-06-07 17:53:11 +0000 UTCI never made the connection between Mariam’s problem and Mirror Dancing until now. That’s a fantastic catch.

2024-06-07 15:37:03 +0000 UTCGod damn Miriam, willing to throw away half her heritage rather than face her demons directly

2024-06-07 14:34:11 +0000 UTCBesides their physical descriptions, this is what clinched it for me: “Oh, amada, I am but a spark to the bonfire of your beauty,” Lord Locke gushed. “Your eyes must be a labyrinth, for I so easily lose myself in them.”
Rune of Doom
2024-06-07 14:30:15 +0000 UTCI see Angharad is starting to learn, the way Tristan thought she would. Thank goodness her dad taught her how the other half of the world thinks, and how to cope with it; and that she was smart enough to try and listen.

2024-06-07 14:26:56 +0000 UTCNote the fishing metaphor. She avoids Imani reeling her in, but she may just have bitten the hook of the Fisher

2024-06-07 13:36:05 +0000 UTCI wonder if Angie's angry glimpse slip is the beginning of what Maryam warned her about - that someone less scrupulous might abuse the contract and start to lose their grip on reality.

2024-06-07 12:33:58 +0000 UTClast part really got me grinning ear to ear like a madman… I absolutely loved an angie pov for once. all that build up until we finally see her grow and develop a sense of camaraderie towards the thirteenth and just came out better for it. I can finally see how she fits into the cabal and how the cable fits her, staying with them honestly have such a good influence on her and now i hope she doesn’t leave… it’s chapters like these that reminds me that this was the same author that wrote akua sahelian. fucking cheers mate.

2024-06-07 12:24:29 +0000 UTCAh I've not read much Gaiman
Joe Rachman
2024-06-07 11:29:18 +0000 UTCI loved the themes of negotiation, reciprocity, and accord running through the chapter. In all the scenes, a fair exchange leads to accord, while trying to take something leads to hostility. It's interesting that Locke and Key interrupted the shade from the implied reveal that Maryam stole something it owned. I strongly suspect that they will be recurring antagonists, trying to trick the 13th into destabilizing the world. Given the part of the narrative we're in, they'll probably be successful in Asphodel.

2024-06-07 07:55:36 +0000 UTCI think you're cooking. The Odyssean pulls on all those stories of Greek heroes who were basically pirates

2024-06-07 06:37:20 +0000 UTCGreat chapter! Among its many marvels, I finally realized who Lord Locke and Lady Keys must be inspired by. And I'm not sure whether to be delighted I figured it out, or embarrassed it took me this long, when it seems so obvious in retrospect.
Rune of Doom
2024-06-07 06:23:13 +0000 UTCThe Golden Fleece was a sign of kingship in ancient Greece; Jason and the Argonauts stole it to prove Jason's right to be king. To stretch this all a little bit, it's the token that changes Odyssean to Oduromai.

2024-06-07 05:42:56 +0000 UTCI'll bet the imprisoned god is the Odyssean. Note how House Lissenos invested so heavily in promoting the Oduromai play, which Song attended last chapter and is now ceremonially performed every year. As well as imprisoning the bloodthirsty old Odyssean responsible for the Ataxia with an aether seal they were trying to bury his memory under the new Oduromai story. How this then links to the Golden Ram is not yet clear. But if the Odyssean is based on the original Odyseuss he is a trickster used to disguises.

2024-06-07 05:42:48 +0000 UTCI enjoy these Friday posts, there are invariably three solid pieces of writing. A series of tasty challenging but enjoyable courses to consume. The world gets explained. The plot progresses. Our characters develop. We are surprised and excited. It's such good writing. Very satisfied.
StrollingEye
2024-06-07 05:15:35 +0000 UTCSo Song rather subtly heeds Angharad's input here about the gunpowder, renegotiates for liquor instead. I wonder how long it will take for Angharad to connect and compare that tidbit with what she thinks she knows about Song shooting Isabel.

2024-06-07 05:12:48 +0000 UTCNice and chunky chapter. I think in the end Maryam is going to end up striking a bargain with her doppleganger. It also occurs to me that ironically if there's anyone who could maybe advise on fighting a mirror of yourself it would be Angharad... Also I'm amused that Maryam's comments on the Odyssean very much feel like EE venting some thoughts they have about the original Odysseus.
