Things are about to go down and I am not ready

Joseph

Right, now I’m gonna get curious and I know I’m pressing the new chapter notif soon as it’s out... And I gotta say, you’re brilliant man. Hope you and your family have a great day.

Ryu

Calling this chapter the breath before the plunge would be pretty accurate, yes.

erraticerrata

I like it! Personally I'm roughly leaning that the Tianxian ambassador is the Ecclesiast suspect. He's been a heavy presence but a completely offscreen one, which would be in line with the Ecclesiast's role thus far. He also has explicitly never been in a room with Song, unlike many of the other contenders - Evander, his staff, Floros, etc. Hard to believe a religious head wouldn't have a contract or boon.

Gynedroid

I hope tristan can at least help one other with the help of the murder god

ppbrro

When Tristan was younger, he had a situation where he was desperate for a hideout and found one, but there was some other kid already there, asleep. He had to either trust that the kid wouldn't sell him out to the gang chasing him, or use a loose tile to bash his head in, and he chose the tile. Basically, the tile represents his inclination to not trust people.

Machalt

I can't quite remember. What does the tile represent again?

Avid_Appletree

Not sure if that sounds like something Tristan would do.

Avid_Appletree

I wonder if Fortuna is implying that Truistan isn't using his contract to its fullest potential.

Avid_Appletree

Any of you have a something good to read in the meantime? I would appreciate it if you recommend a novel or two.

Ryu

Fortuna is all in on Tristan. Her demeanor might seem flighty, but she is definitionally not a god who hedges her bets.

Nedardo

replying to "sarvashaktimaan": Not on my bingo card either but also for the reason that I think he would be aware that if he publicly has the support of such a god the Watch would actually take him seriously enough to end his victory pretty fast and then take the shipyard for themselves, unless he was banking on the great powers of the world disallowing that. replying to "Rune of Doom": Not only would it be neat it would also be an easy solution to Song's problems, which wouldn't be very fun at this conjecture. It's better to see the 13th overcome their troubles rather than their troubles easing up by themselves.

sapassde .

It would also be good in that it would be a sacrifice for the 13th, as would the others abandoning their personal worries for the sake of the group. If this group does come out victorious by the end of the book I do hope there's at least 1 new member joining them, though that'd probably wait until their 2nd year at Scholomance because of them finishing their test early.

sapassde .

A "nice" out for Maryam would be to come to some sort of mutually agreeable and beneficial arrangement with Hooks rather than murdering her. That would be a 'treason' in that Maryam would be betraying both her own plans and the role that was selected for her, but 'good' in that she wouldn't be murdering Hooks and more of the Cauldron would survive.

Rune of Doom

Might Evander as the Ecclesiast give Song the greenlight to kill him, both personally and as a Watchwoman? (That seems too neat a solution for E.E. or this story, so I'm actually now thinking he isn't... although he looks like he could be. A red herring that is left for us to imagine for ourselves, rather than being conspicuously dangled?)

Rune of Doom

Fuck, everyone on their own sawing at their own ropes. Coins tossed up in the air, a 50/50 chance of landing on Oak. Damn well done, can only hold our breath and hope when the dust settles there’s something left.

Colin Love

You know what I will try to save chapters too

Joseph

Right?? Each of their development is concerning but the way it’s going with Maryam has me preparing for the worst TT. She raised too many flags, her conflict is different from the others in that it is of her own making, and she is shown to be… unstable, lately, she’s not being reasonable about it too. And I really, really hate ego death in important characters…

Ryu

My guess is that this was the chapter of making choices before the big finale, which will probably be a few chapters, then maybe a chapter of wrap-up and an epilogue to Book Two. If I were to make a bet (which I'm sure Fortuna would appreciate), I'd say we're getting around 75 chapters, give or take an epilogue.

Pteromys Momonga

It sounded like Tristan was leaning toward going after Maryam rather than the Nineteenth, before the cult had the audacity to get in his way. But if he can mess with the Nineteenth's ritual, that might at least draw heat off the other three by redirecting the cult's attention.

Pteromys Momonga

Now the hope is for them to take the leaps for each other, that'd be beautiful to see and frankly I'm pretty sure all of them need to do it to get anywhere. Going along with their own plans instead of doing something for each other will result in the worst end for all of them.

sapassde .

Honestly I can't see either really working, the 19th would no doubt not trust him in the least and offering himself would likely be too suspicious or just not effective to actually get them to do anything for him instead of serving themselves.

sapassde .

Nooo Tristien! Don't go down the street, go up, go up and save the princess!!! Ahhhh who am I kidding, our mad lad has a plan to sweep the table and bankrupt the house!

COR

I'm not saying he's gonna succeed...

Joe Rachman

I don't think this is so optimistic of a story

sarvashaktimaan

That would be wild. I don't think it's the case because several details don't add up. Mainly: He had met Locke and Key in person. And he would have been more obstructive of the Watch... Unless, of course, he is trying to bait all his opponents into a doomed coup and then cement his regime with the support of the resurrected god. Though, as I said, not in my bingo card.

sarvashaktimaan

Gods, this one is a fucking CRESCENDO. Everything came together in the best of ways, I was fully invested every single moment. Fuck!

Lucy Severine

“And you’ll tell me you never enjoyed it, pulling on the string that unravels the impossible into the possible? That unseen upset, the long odds brought home.” Was that a pivot? If so, what will come of it? Or is it foreshadowing, that something will happen that will result in progress in unraveling the mysteries of Tristan’s contract soon? I am so damn hyped man All four of them are reaching a point of no return, each with their own conflict. There is too much at stake. And so I can’t help but feel that, where this is going, something is bound to go horribly wrong, that at least one of them is gonna just lose. Unless one or more of them takes a leap and makes a miracle to help another. That would be a treat. We know Tristan and Song want to, but Song has so much at stake in her own conflict and Tristan, well, it can go either way with him. Does anyone know how many chapters are left? I think I’ll save chapters until the story reaches its conclusion. I don’t think I can wait for even a week further for the conclusions after reading another chapter… Goddamn but I love this book.

Ryu

Petyr baelish wishes he had Tristan’s capacity to take advantage of any prevailing chaos

PoiDess

Such a good chapter! The tension escalates in all the right ways.

Shemetz

I think Tristan wasn't necessarily recommending that Song kill them all, but that she might use the chaos to maneuver them into a situation that might change the narrative. Maybe she "saves" them from the nobles and gets their silence in return; maybe she gets most of them killed and is able to bargain with the few survivors.

Pteromys Momonga

She has long provided what Tristan needed most in his life- a stable, unconditional companion. Just think back to the panic he experienced when she was wrested away for a while earlier.

Draken09

Would Song massacring the YE actually improve her situation? I was under the impression another sect had caught, shared the info with other sects, and it so happened the one in Tratheke had the opportunity to leverage this. If they all go dark surely the other sects still know the info and probably release it.

Joe Rachman

Also, NICE.

PoiDess

Really excellent chapter. Seconding Ed's idea. I think Tristan is going to trade with the 19th - maybe poison them and then offer an antidote or maybe offer himself - in return for their aid cutting the ropes around the rest of the 13th.

Joe Rachman

He's going to poison the 19th and then offer an antidote in return for their collaboration. Or maybe he offers himself as well?

Joe Rachman

my bet's still Evander as the Ecclesiast

PoiDess

First time Maryam outright admits to love, even in her own mind, and I can't help but feel like that'll end up being what Hooks ends up permanently taking from her, best case scenario. I can't help but be most worried for Maryam since ego death is a very real, very tangible possibility that she's actively putting on the scales here and it would be heartbreaking to see her and Tristan's bond be broken by either a lack of trust or at the hands of a hungry ghost. Also, one day Tristan is going to legitimately put down the tile, and it'll be so cathartic.

Machalt

he is going to reclute the 19 right? make a deal maybe use the ritual and enter the layer to the palace and more.

Ed

Fortuna is being an actual patron goddess. I wonder if she’s always been that and Tristan simply hasn’t taken much heed before; the way Song does with hers.

Aguido Horatio Davis

I really hope Tristan goes through with the murder 🤞

Victor Cavalcanti

nahh how can i wait a whole week for the next chapter? this next wait is going to be agonising

joie01

I love all these character interaction moments. Maryam and Tristan having such a strong bond, where they can be angry with each other and even withhold information - which would normally be a dealbreaker for Tristan - but still trust each other overall. Tristan slowly realizing that Song has genuinely changed the way she's treated him, and that she sees him as a comrade, not a tool. Angharad and Maryam being not quite friends, but finding common ground and mutual support. The four of them are such compelling, complex, heartbreakingly flawed characters, and they bounce off each other so well in all combinations; while my favorite is still Maryam's and Tristan's rock solid support carefully layered under face-saving banter, I'm really enjoying all the other configurations, too.
