MADISON
Ladies, gentlemen, and esteemed guests—WE'RE DONE WITH FLATS. It only took several years and stops and starts BUT! That means that all I have left to do is render, that is, shade. (And design the cover and the interior but *waves hands.*)
The entirety of August was dedicated to penciling and inking several new pages of Madison. Glad those portions are finished and glad to return to FLIP!!
RETURNING TO FLIP
The header image for this month's newsletter is from one of my favorite scenes in the graphic novel. It's actually a scene that I mention frequently, especially when I'm pitching the story to people in conversation. (Spoilers: during a quick back and forth, Flip and Chi-Chi argue whether or not Flip is allowed to say the n-word while he's in Chi-Chi's body. Chi-Chi has to think about that for a moment.)
The last 100 pages of Flip are the heavy scenes, a lot of tears and shouting and self-reflection. I'm readying myself with the knowledge that these scenes won't look as perfect as I had originally envisioned them. When you've been dreaming up a story for years, it's easy to get disappointed when you finally write and draw the damn thing, but that's all part of the process.
BARDA & SCOTT
Recently finished reading Old Gods and New by John Morrow, a look at the construction and inspiration behind Jack Kirby's Fourth World. I'm constantly learning more about Kirby and the worlds he built. In particular, Apokolips is not just a world of pain and evil, it's truly a realm of slavery and dull hopelessness, in contrast to effervescent and free New Genesis. Granny Goodness calls it home, though!

This month is a bit up in the air, but I'll make an announcement as soon as I know when I can pin down a date.
