Not sure what you'd call this step.
It's not part of comic making in general, but it's part of how F:NM gets it's 'look'. I use a grungy, sepia toned texture and place it behind my artwork, and then set the different layers to different settings. In some cases, I just fade the opacity, in others I use colour burn.

Shading!
Shading can cause a pretty drastic change to an image, like suggesting texture and depth.
You may also notice that I changed the colour of some of the likework here, to help it blend better with the shades. Particularly you can see this with the horizon on panel four.

When I ink my F:NM stuff, I use a pen called 'Nib Gritty'. It's a pen that I think gives a lot of character to the line work, but honestly, it can be a bit of a pain in the ass.

In this case, I didn't entirely sketch out -every- detail, if only because I wanted to give myself something to do in the inking stage so I wasn't just tracing over my own lines.

Almost done with this page. I want Rald's first appearance to be pretty good... Need some burned out buildings on the perimeters and cliff/rocks in the foreground.
