Here's a guitar tip on one method of starting with improvisation. Personally, I don't recommend starting by learning a bunch of scales contrary to what many think. Melody is king, and playing scales up & down is very un-musical in my opinion.

Here's a great arpeggio exercise, which outlines all the diatonic chords in C-major ascending & descending. Arpeggios is a great way to understand chords and also to begin with improvising.
