A note I wrote in is that Cale has PTSD, anxiety, depression and bpd, and does not recognize that, viewing them as personal issues that he is completely at fault for. his past relationship made him feel a lot more emotionally frail and experience a lot of self loathing.
unknown to him, marigold isn't too different.
