On the easel (A Tale of a Whale)

Rachael Padilla post On the easel (A Tale of a Whale) from patreon

This piece is a departure from my typical work in both style and medium.  It's a work in gouache that has more of an illustrative feel. It's an intentional decision to accompany a story from my childhood! It involves expectation versus reality and a really strange travelling attraction!

I'll share the full st...

The learning curve of time overlapping time. This week's theme seems to be that of worlds overlapping. This is an experiment of time in flux. A current moment as it dances to the tune of another.

"They Call Me Coyote" is my current series of art that has now spanned the mediums of video, painting, and digital art! I spent some time blending worlds and mediums digitally! From  a backdrop of my original painting including characters from my own mind and the characters from comic books, to creating images where my o...

Why do I . . .?

I'm an artist that uses my own body and image in my art! I get a lot of questions about that! Here, a brief explanation of why and the benefits of doing so.

Behind the Scenes

Rachael Padilla post Behind the Scenes from patreon

Creating a smooth, sleek, finished product in a video only reveals one side of the story!

On the other side of the camera there is often what you may not expect! Like a ladder with a table top easel on it. Which holds a giant hand printed queue card, because I just can't seem to remember what I was going to say! I still...

On the easel (or work in progress)

Rachael Padilla post On the easel (or work in progress) from patreon

It was a busy day of filming! My current series of work, “They Call Me Coyote” has some unexpected sources of inspiration, including the Animal Man comic books. Today’s work included some dedicated reading (with a bowl of Jelly Bellies nearby), and filming. I take my movie making just as seriously as I take my painting....

It's mid-February, and winter still has its hold. It won't be long now until the scenery changes again! I anticipate green buds and new life as spring approaches. For now, I'll enjoy winter's final days.

Water

When the water creates particularly spectacular waves, the lady of the lake invites you to join in on the fun!

The beautiful waves were the inspiration for this short film! I coupled it with some great sounds and video.

If there had been a psycho-killer lurking about, I would have been in trouble! It seems that the secret formula for certain doom in 80s horror always starts with boobs!

Tomorrow, I'll release this video to the public on YouTube, but you get to see it  first! I often explore interesting places, and Georgia is full of famous filming locations! This place is better known as "Camp Crystal Lake", and if you're a fan of horror, you probably know that name from the Friday the 13th movies...

I have a hard time giving up on old tech.  I still shoot on film sometimes and I'm not afraid of using old tech to achieve some fun effects.  I like to experiment and test my equipment side by side sometimes and I thought that you might like to see!

Learning

I always try new things when I'm making videos.  Different lighting, angles, even different cameras.  I work on editing ticks and after effects.  I try to keep them interesting while I'm learning so experiments can produce some fun results!

I started a new painting today! It’s 40 by 64 inches, which can be hard to visualize, so I’m standing in front of it for scale. It’s a big one! It’s the second piece in a triptych. The first being the Coyote herself (also pictured for reference)!

More "Action Pants"

Here are some more shots of my version of VALIE EXPORT's "Action Pants: Genital Panic".  I had to try several hair options and even outfits to get it just right.  Then once I had taken the photos the editing was tricky too.  Here are several full color and monochrome versions.

Rachael Padilla post "Action Pants: Genital Panic" from patreon

Originally conceived and performed by VALIE EXPORT in 1968 this performance art piece has a very dramatic impact.  I have been working on it myself and I believe that the results are as unique and "my own" as when Marina Abramovic performed it at the Guggenheim Museum in 2005 as part of her "7 Easy Pieces" series. <...
