Honestly when you're drawing any character you can always start with very general features - then copy and paste the face and change little things to see what you would prefer.

I tend to very quickly throw down this shape for ears in pictures. Can't go wrong X'D It always looks like more effort went in that did!

When finalising the ear thought I would urge you to add little distinguishing features so there's more character - yes even ears can add to your character design.
